The Scotland 7s squad have been preparing well for the 30th anniversary of the annual Hong Kong Sevens tomorrow (31 March to 2 April).
Team Manager Peter Gallagher said: “Hong Kong Sevens have a very professional set-up and the guys are approaching it in a very professional way.”
Seven of the twelve-man squad flew from Melbourne after the completion of the Commonwealth Games. Captain Mark Lee rejoined the squad having hopped over to South Africa to represent the Army while new squad members David Callam,Glasgow Hawk's Scott Forrest and Matt Couper are fitting in well and everybody is ready for a tough three days of rugby.
Gallagher continued: “We are playing the top level in the world and the way we play our rugby is appreciated by the top nations. The Scottish standard is high, we just occasionally let ourselves down with simple errors but no-one takes us lightly and they know we are a good side.”
The team arrived on Tuesday (28 March) and have settled in quickly with daily training sessions on the local pitches. They also had the chance to meet a group of ex-pats at the St. Andrews Society last night who are all keen to see the team perform over the weekend.
The opening match tomorrow will be against a well organised Japan side then on Saturday, the challenges of Singapore and gold medal winners New Zealand, who defeated England in Commonwealth Games final to take gold, await.
Gallagher said: “Japan are very capable and deserve a lot of respect. It’s almost as if the sevens game was designed for them – they’ve got pace and quick feet. But if we play our game and play the way we have been preparing to play, we’re confident that we can win that opening game.”
Mark Lee echoed Gallagher’s positive words after today’s training session. He said: ”The team is focused and we are feeling confident.”
Match reports from each game will be appearing on the Scotland 7s website to keep you up to date on all the action over the weekend at the Hong Kong Sevens.
