Scotland Under 19 ran in eight tries to nil in a 48-0 defeat of Japan in Dubai today in their third game of the IRB U19 World Championship.

Scores from centres Jack Cuthbert (Bath) and Graham Hogg (Hawick) with a third from Stewart’s Melville FP lock Richard Vernon saw the Scots go in 19-0 at half-time after Dundee HSFP stand-off and Scotland U19 captain Cameron Ferguson added two conversions.

After the break, the Scots settled into their stride and began to take advantage of their scoring opportunities, something they have been looking to set right from previous games.

Watsonians scrumhalf Murray Bringhurst and Glasgow Hawks back-row Ross MacDonald widened the gap between the two sides in the second half which also saw two tries from Dundee HSFP prop Alan Dymock and another from Vernon who clinched his second of the day. Ferguson added another two conversions.

Scotland U19 head coach Peter Wright said: “We got off to a slow start but the boys began to take their chances.

“The team played to their potential and it is amazing how the mood in the camp has changed after the win,” he added.
