Death of Wales legend Ken Jones
MATT LLOYD

WELSH rugby legend and Olympic sprinter Ken Jones has died at the age of 84.

The former Newport wing, who served with the RAF, scored 17 tries in his 44 Test appearances, including the winner in Wales' last victory over the All Blacks in 1953.

He played in all three Tests for the British and Irish Lions during the 1950 tour of New Zealand where he scored 18 tries. A supreme all-round athlete, Jones also won Olympic silver in the 4x100m relay the 1948 Games in London. He used his sprinter's pace on the rugby field to score 146 tries in 293 games for Newport and was Wales' record caps holder until Gareth Edwards surpassed his total nearly 20 years later and was awarded the OBE for services to sport in 1960. A minute's silence was held before last night's Celtic League match between Newport Gwent and Cardiff at Rodney Parade
