HAWICK HIGH TAKE BELL LAWRIE PLATE HONOURS
Hawick High School 15 Glasgow Academy 10
Hawick High School won the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools under-18 plate competition defeating Glasgow Academy in the final on the back pitches at Murrayfield tonight.
Both sides attempted to play out of the tackle and keep the ball alive in an entertaining contest. Hawick, playing with the wind in the first-half, led 8-3 by the break.
Centre Rory Scott landed a seventh minute penalty, to which Glasgow Academy stand-off Andrew Lundie responded in kind five minutes later. From scrum possession just before half-time, Hawick’s Gary Johnstone broke and twice stepped out of contact before off-loading to his supporting full-back Scott McLeod for a fine try. Scott’s conversion was just short.
Hawick enjoyed territorial advantage for a decent period after the restart but it was Glasgow who claimed the half’s first points after 55 minutes, full-back Euan Shand blazing away for their try again off scrum ball. Lundie’s conversion gave Glasgow the lead at 10-8.
Hawick re-established their control on the game and though several tap penalty moves foundered on strong Glasgow defence, Scott eventually found a gap and sailed through for the winning try which he also converted.
