DEREK CASEY TO ADDRESS A.G.M.


Derek Casey will be addressing the Glasgow Sports Council A.G.M being held on Monday night at Old Anniesland on Glasgow's Commonwealth Games Bid

Glasgow 2014 Bid Director unveiled
Derek Casey, a former Chief Executive of the UK Sports Council, has been appointed as the Director of Glasgow's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games


Mr Casey also served on the organising committee of the 2002 Commonwealth Games that took place in Manchester, and has been advising the Glasgow bid partners (Glasgow City Council, Scottish Executive and the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland) on a consultative basis up until now.



In this new, full-time role working out of the Games 2014 offices in Trongate, Glasgow, Mr Casey will have the responsibility of co-ordinating all bid-related activity as well as leading in the preparation on the technical document that needs to be submitted to the Commonwealth Games Federation as part of the bid.



Welcoming the appointment, George Black, Chief Executive of Glasgow City Council said:



"I am delighted that we have been able to appoint someone with Derek’s knowledge and experience to co-ordinate Glasgow’s bid. His understanding of sport here in Scotland and across the Commonwealth is a huge asset that can only strengthen the bid that we are making."



The appointment is full time and will last until November 2007 when the Commonwealth Games Federation will make its final decision on the 2014 host city.



Derek Casey is a graduate of the University of Glasgow, a fellow of the Institute for Sport and Recreation Management and a fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts.



As Chief Executive of the Sports Council in the UK and of Sport England from 1994 – 2001, he was responsible for national and regional development programmes on community sports development, facilities planning, design, development and management and on high performance sport.



During the period 1994-2001 Derek was responsible for the establishment and bedding in of the Sports Lottery Fund in the UK, the development of the English Institute for Sport and the funding of sports facilities from local to national level including the range of facilities constructed for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. At its peak the annual income for the Sports Lottery Fund was of the order of £300-350m



Leading up to the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002, he was responsible for the development of the World Class Support Programmes (Performance, Potential and Start) for English and British sportsmen and sportswomen including personalised funding and support in the fields of sports medicine, science and coaching.



Derek has acted as an advisor on sports development in a number of countries, particularly in Africa - including South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mauritius and The Seychelles.
