Borders-bound De Luca inspires Heriot's win
ATHOLL INNES
NICK De Luca got his new Borders connection off to a good start by picking up a winner's medal and the player of the tournament award at the Jed-Forest Sevens on Saturday.
De Luca, who joins Border Reivers next season, was a key player for Heriot's in the club's first success in the tournament for 19 years. While De Luca did not score in the 26-17 final win over Watsonians, his experience counted even when Heriot's were reduced to six players after Fijian Emosi Naisavanaki was yellow carded for a high tackle on Mark Robertson.
"It was a great day out. There is nothing quite like the Borders circuit," said De Luca afterwards.
Watsonians were chasing the tie after Neil Cochrane had equalised Apolosi Satala's early score. Tries by Naisavanaki on his immediate return to the field, Satala and James Thompson saw Heriot's home with Jamie Blackwood and Richard Borthwick, on loan from Stewart's Melville, replying for Watsonians.
Jed were presented with the Kings of the Sevens trophy with Newcastle Falcons, who played in only three of the ten tournaments, in second place, 21 points behind, followed by Melrose.
