Hawks Board member Andy Little recently discovered two trophies in the name of the Milngavie Highland Games .This event predates the Milngavie and Beasden H.G.which only started in the early 1970s.The Milngavie event was held at Auchenhowie which is now the Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club and the Rangers Football Academy.Andy's connection was through his uncle who was a member of the organising committee
The two trophies date back to 1953 and should have been presented to Wille Jack and David Gracie in recognition of their acheivement in representing GB at the 1952 Olympics at Helsinki
Wille was a member of local athletics club Victoria Park AAC and was regarded as one of Scotland's greatest sprinters,he won the Scottish 220 yds title on four successive occasions and was 100yds Champion in 1951,52,53
His best time was 10.5 for the 100 metres and represented GB at both this event and the sprint relay at Helsinki
David was also an immense athlete representing GB in Helsinki over the 400 Metres Hurdles clocking 52.4sec in the semi finals After the Olympics David set a Scottish Native record at the Rangers Sports at Ibrox running 53.7 sec and later set a UK Record of 52.3sec in Malmo
With the assistance of the Herald Athletics correspondent that well known Watsonian Doug Gillon the search is now on for both of these former greats so that the trophies can now be presented albeit over half a century late
