WHEN THE BARBARIANS PLAYED ACCIES

With the arrival of the Barbarians this week to play Scotland at Murrayfield memories are stirred

This famous rugby institution goes under the motto of"For gentlemen of all classes but for no bad sportsman of any class"

On the 3rd of September 1988 the Baa Baas took to the green sward of New Anniesland to play Glasgow Accies in the "Herbert Waddell Memorial Match" Herbert Waddell had been President of the Barbarians 1973-1988

The Barbarians have only ever played three Scottish Club sides Glasgow Accies,Melrose 1976 and Stirling County 1995

The Baa Baas fielded a very strong team including such as Paul Thorburn,Will Carling and Johnathon Davies

Eschewing the modern professional approach of resting players for such occasions the bold Accies who were made of stern stuff only rested the day before the match. There was a debate whether Accies should rest players for the Jedforest match the week before but in true Accie fashion the players refused to be rested.

Al Graham recalls
Glasgow Accies 22 Barbarians 42

"Accies played unbelievably well against the strongest Ba Ba's side they could field. It was strong because they wanted to try them out before they played one of the touring sides at Cardiff in the November. Iain Jarvie was called back from retirement and score two great tries. The stand was all ticket and 500 were in it. The crowd was thought to have been over 2000.
Jonathan Davies came off with a slight injury. It was deemed so bad that he could not travel back to Cardiff to play in a demonstration game somewhere up the valleys.
Clive Norling was the referee and a great guest speaker in a marquee with over 300 in attendance. It was such a foul night that it was lucky that it did not blow away.
The previous week had been extremely wet and Head Groundsman Robert Cheape couldn't get the grass cut. On the Saturday morning he had to roll it flat and it proved to be a good playing surface

Throughout the years 29 players from the clubs of Anniesland have pulled on the famous Barbarian jersey from Jimmy Dykes Laurie Duff and Wilson Shaw to Brian Simmers and Shade Munro and on to Cammy Little, Scott Hutton and Graeme Morrison

The Barbarians team on that famous occasion was
