GHK draw Linwood in Cup

NATIONAL CUP FIRST ROUND FIXTURES
Posted: 06/Jul/06

The draw for the National Cup has whipped up a tornado in the Caledonia regional leagues as RAF Kinloss and RAF Lossiemouth will battle it out in the first round in October.

The dog fight between the top guns is just one of many exciting ties which were pulled out of the bag when the new regionalised Cup draw was made at Murrayfield earlier today. In the East region, Walkerburn will travel to St Boswells while in the West, Cowal will play host to Clydebank.

The format of the National Cup has changed for 2006-07 as the draw for the first and second round ties are between the clubs in the regional leagues only. The national leagues come into the competition in round three with the premier divisions entering the fray in round four.

In order to ensure there are 24 regional clubs going into round three, some clubs have been awarded a bye in the first round. In Caledonia, there are six byes between 30 clubs, the West regional leagues have been awarded four byes among the 32 clubs competing, and in the East, three clubs out of 21 have a first-round bye.

The regional league clubs that are knocked out in rounds one and two then compete in a new Plate competition, so every club in Scotland has a genuine chance of reaching finals day at Murrayfield.

The draw was made by Don Burns, who was recently elected as the Midlands regional leagues representative on the Scottish Rugby Council, and Colin Thomson, SRU Head of Community Rugby.

All first round National Cup ties will be played on Saturday 7 October.
