GHK lost to oban lorne in the final of the Helensburgh Sevens
report below
Helensburgh 7s
Drawn in pool A along with Whitecraigs, Loch Lomond and a President's VII, GHK entered the inaugral Helensburgh sevens tournament with high hopes of doing well.
The opening fixture of the competiton saw Whitecraigs pip GHK by a try in a shocking game of 7s with both teams underperforming. However GHK bounced back and defeated the slightly ageing President's VII by 52-0 as they started to play as a unit and some nice 7s rugby. The final group game saw GHK need a victory to see them through against Loch Lomond. A 12-0 win was posted guaranteeing a place in the semis.
A huge amount of confusion arose as a result of GHK, Whitecraigs and Loch Lomond winning 2 and losing 1. Eventually the sensible option of points difference saw GHK top ahead of Whitecraigs.
The first semi saw Oban defeat Whitecraigs narrowly leaving the second semi between the hosts and GHK to decide Oban's opposition. With GHK tiring, it was never going to be easy. But great heart won the day as GHK came home with a 5 point victory.
Two exhausted teams took the pitch for the final which proved to be an excellent spectacle, Oban sealing the win with a late try winning 26-20. Both teams played some fantastic 7s and great credit as there were a lot of tired legs. But a nip tuck game with the lead changing hands a number of times was provided.A fairly impressive opening to the 7s season for GHK overall.
Some excellent running from Aussie Tom, Liam McDermid and Stuart Hunter with Olly Jones playmaking and great heart in defence from everyone helped the team enjoy their day. Special mentions going to Stuart Pollock for some excellent cover tackling, Murray Stewart for some bizarre jumping into the tackle and to Gordi Reid, Gillon Rand and Olly Jones for playing very nearly every minute of every game. Also to Colin Donald and Dave Fearnley who unfortunately got injured after some good performances.
