Tom 's service to Rugby recognised.

Hamilton RFC took the collective honours, the Lanarkshire club picking up no fewer than three prizes. It was a reflection of how they have been runaway winners of the National League’s first division and consequently securing promotion to the Premiership.

Hamilton were named club of the year as well as taking two individual awards. David Gemmell was awarded the National League Player of the Year, and Ian Smith, Hamilton’s tireless president, was named Club Member/Official of the Year.

Frank Harrow, who has been the Kilmarnock club secretary for the past 20 years, was given a Special Merit Award. So was Tom Howie, who has served Kilmarnock, Glasgow Academicals, and Glasgow Hawks as well as having been chairman of the Glasgow committee back in the old days of amateur rugby.

Other award winners:

Premiership Player of the Year – James Noonan (Ayr).

Young Player of the Year – John Barclay (GHA and Glasgow Rugby).

Referee of the Year – Andrew MacPherson.

Sponsor of the Year – McQueen’s Removals (Oban Lorne RFC

GLASGOW RUGBY AWARDS DINNER

Sunday 17 April 2005 (6.30pm for 7.00)

Glasgow Thistle Hotel, Renfrew Street

For the past five years the Glasgow and District Rugby Union has held a fund-raising dinner for the Glasgow Thistles Development Squad. The dinner has always proved to be highly successful, raising substantial funds in support of the young players who have been lucky enough to be selected for the Thistles. This year’s dinner will be held in the Glasgow Thistle Hotel on Sunday 17 April.

A few years ago the format of the dinner was changed to a Glasgow Rugby Awards night to recognise and celebrate achievements within Glasgow district rugby. Many nominations have been registered, and more that 16 clubs have been recognised or had players nominated for awards. Over 600 guests attended last year's dinner, and all enjoyed a highly entertaining evening. This season we want to repeat and hopefully better that success.

This season's Thistles will be based at Limerick University, which has been chosen because of its superb facilities and location. It is regularly used by other sporting organisations such as the Ireland’s international rugby squad, Sale Sharks, Bath RFC, and Everton. Limerick is the home of Munster Rugby, regarded as one of the most successful professional rugby teams in Europe.
