THE HAWICK PERSPECTIVE

HAWICK 10, GLASGOW HAWKS 7
After last weeks last minute defeat by Ayr and an improved performance, Hawick were eager to carry on where they left off and put a much needed win on the board against last year's champions, Glasgow Hawks, who also have been struggling to find their form in the early stages of this campaign.
With young Rory Hutton back from injury at stand off and Keith Hedley returning to the wing, the home support were hoping for a change in fortunes.
Hawick took the play to the Hawks from the kick off but were unable to break down their solid defence. Much of the play was contested in midfield and only on the odd occasion did either side look like crossing their opponents line. Colin Murray put the only points on the board with a penalty after 15 minutes. Indeed, Hawks had a couple of simple penalty attempts in front of the posts but both went wide of the mark and Hawick held a narrow 3-0 lead at halftime.
The same pattern of play continued in the second period. Hawick were working their way up field when an attempted kick through bounced nicely into Hawks hands who scored a breakaway converted try under the posts to hold a 7-3 lead. With normal time finished and now well into injury time, Hawks had two players yellow-carded. With Hawick camped on the Hawks line, the difference in numbers eventually told, and what proved to be the final move of the match, Greg Thomson pounced for the clinching score, goaled by Colin Murray, to great relief of the home support for a hard fought by 10 points to 7 and four needed league points.
