Edinburgh Gunners back-up squad travelled west this afternoon, taking on Glasgow Warriors back-up squad in torrential conditions at Whitecraigs.
The weather played its part in what was an even match, but eventually Glasgow stole away winning 13-5. Scott Barrow opened the scoring for the home side with a try 25 minutes into the first half. Edinburgh’s Fergus Pringle’s try midway through the second half equalled things, but Michael Adamson’s penalty was followed by a late score from Sam Pinder to end the match in Glasgow’s favour.
Edinburgh Gunners interim assistant coach Iain Paxton said: “There were some good performances under difficult conditions but it was hard to play much rugby because of the driving rain.
“On the positive side, we got all our players onto the field, so a lot of young guys got a chance to run out and did very well, given the conditions.

WARRIORS WINNING IN THE RAIN
Posted: 18/Sep/06
Tenacity was the name of the game as Glasgow Warriors defeated Edinburgh Gunners 13-5 at Whitecraigs this afternoon in the torrential rain.
The weather didn’t let up for the full 80 minutes and neither did Glasgow’s defence as they stuck in to end game with replacement scrum half Sam Pinder clinching the crucial try in the dying minutes of the match.
With all subs used on both sides, the younger players had to stand up and be counted and that they did. Glasgow back up team coach Peter Wright said: “They all played the conditions very well and the key on a day with weather like this is to minimise mistakes and they did that. If any mistakes crept in, they reacted well to it. Their ball retention as good and I thought that Moray Low performed well in the scrum and Calum Forrester was the stand out player for Glasgow.”
Glasgow opened the scoring with a Scott Barrow try. The centre, who had looked lively with the ball in hand or the first 20 mins of the game pinched the ball from the forwards after two impressive driving mauls, firstly from the half way line then from a lineout on the 10 metre line into the scoring zone.
The game was pretty much played in the centre of the pitch for the majority of the half as both sides struggled with the slippery ball. Edinburgh had a fair few periods of sustained attack but the Glasgow defence held out until quarter of an hour into the second half when Fergus Pringle piled over the Glasgow line for Edinburgh in the far left corner of the pitch.
With the rain still lashing down, it was anyone’s game until a Michael Adamson penalty for Glasgow broke the deadlock, taking the Warrior 8-5 into the lead.
The Gunners were hungry to claw the score back but could not find any gaps in the Glasgow defensive line. However, when Glasgow got possession they held onto it and used it well with several pick and drives and eventually, a jinky run through three Edinburgh defenders saw Sam Pinder cross to make the final score 13-5 to the Warriors
