BACK-UP SQUAD TRIUMPH AT SALE

Edinburgh’s back-up squad secured a 17-13 victory over Sale Jets tonight at Heywood Road, thanks to a runaway try from Simon Cross and another from Andrew Kelly in the second half.

The squad had a slow start to the game, perhaps not helped by an unscheduled detour while trying to find the ground. David Blair, younger brother of Edinburgh’s Mike, opened the scoring for Sale Jets with a penalty and Rhys Jones added a second to put the homeside 6-0 in front after seven minutes.

Edinburgh went ahead after 26 minutes when Simon Cross ran a full forty metres down the left wing to score in the corner, and Currie’s Alistair Warnock added the conversion. The stand-off added a penalty and the back-up squad were leading 10-6 at half time.

Edinburgh’s second try came from Andrew Kelly who broke through and scored under the posts, leaving Ander Monro with an easy conversion to make it 17-6 after 50 minutes.

Sale Jets came back as Ben Lloyd also went under the posts and Jones added the extra points.

Edinburgh coach Iain Paxton said: “The boys played well although the extra bit on our journey didn’t help us at the start. We are really pleased as everyone got on the field at some point, however, we lost momentum a bit when we made the changes and Sale came back into the game. We had long periods of territory and possession and just need to be a wee bit more ruthless in the scoring area.”
