Ayr take the Hawks down

RARELY do opposing coaches agree at the end of a match, unless to berate the referee, but after an exhilarating contest at Millbrae both Ayr's Craig Redpath and Hawks' David Wilson agreed - "It was a great game of rugby." Indeed it was, with both sides giving everything, Hawks to stay back on track, Ayr to collect their first league win against the champions.
After Mike Adamson's opening penalty, Damien Kelly crashed over for Ayr then Pierluigi Gentile scattered tacklers for try number two but Stewart Smith's try on the half hour for Hawks saw the match finely poised at 10-8 at the break.
Nick Lavelle's try two minutes into the second half followed by Ben Colley's penalty stretched Ayr away but two identical tries in four minutes took Hawks ahead. Twice Adamson speared the penalty to the corner and twice the Hawks pack rumbled to give first Greg Francis then Sandy Warnock the try. Adamson's conversion of the second took Hawks into a 20-18 lead but when Kelly finished off a crushing spell of Ayr pressure, the lead changed hands again.
Credit to Hawks in the final ten minutes for not going for the draw with two kickable penalties but their gamble for a try failed to pay off as the Ayr defence stood solid to clinch a notable win.
