RUGBY UNION: DAVIE'S BOYS DOWN WITH HEADS HIGH Apr 25 2005
By Roddy Duncan
GHA boss Davie Wilson insists his side are a better rugby team than champs Glasgow Hawks - despite losing their Premiership top-flight status.
Wilson's kids lost their battle for survival when they were bundled out 29-21 by their city rivals and Watsonians sealed a remarkable escape act with a win at Hawick.
But defiant former Hawks skipper Davie claimed GHA had paid the price for trying to entertain the fans.
He said: 'I can't fault the commitment of the players because they got close to taking the Scottish champs.
'We're down to Division Two despite playing some really good rugby and that's a bitter pill to swallow.
'We're a better rugby playing side than them. Hawks benefited from the luxury of a big forward pack and a one-dimensional game.
'In our two games I haven't been aware of them playing with the ball in hand and feel quite sorry for their backs.
'They killed us with their low drives. We knew if we gave away penalties they'd just kick to the corner and drive.
'GHA have given Premier1 a lot of good rugby in the past couple of years and been a credit to the division.
'It's important we bounce back but that's becoming more difficult with your top guys going to the pro-game.'
