Melrose
A warm welcome to our friends from Melrose today. Our links with the Borders club have been traditionally strong off the pitch with many good friendships established over the years. On the pitch – well, a bit of friendly rivalry exists. Craig Chalmers brings his side to Anniesland after a confidence-boosting win against their Border colleagues Hawick last week.
While Hawks, having been involved in a superbly exciting and high-quality encounter with Ayr, need to turn improving performance into a win.
IRB 7s
Great news that the IRB 7s are coming to Scotland – and will be here for 5 years. It does seem though that in taking the event to Murrayfield that there is some disagreement with Borders Council who claimed that they were happy to underwrite the event being held in Melrose. The Chief Executive of the SRU claims that this assurance is not in place. What a shame that good news becomes tainted by the Scottish tradition of a family fight at the wedding reception.
Glasgow Rugby Board
It is interesting to see the new Board being put in place for the Glasgow Warriors team. While wishing Charles Shaw and team well it does seem that their main function is as a marketing advisory board. Their main areas of interest will be in growing the support and developing the community outreach programme. Why not take it a step further and allow them to exercise proper executive control over the Glasgow set-up?
Give them control over the budget, hiring and firing and charge them with the responsibility of getting Glasgow to the ¼ final of the European championship + top 4 in the Magners within 3 years? To do that they would probably need to draw in additional support to improve performance – playing and financial. Of course failure to make progress towards these targets would lead to a change in the Board. Just a thought….
Greaves
The Scotland set-up has decided to follow Hawks lead and have tied up with Greaves as there merchandising and retail advisers. Hawks have a long-standing relationship with the Greaves organisation and our new line of Hawks merchandise should be available within the next 4 weeks. Just in time for the Christmas rush!
Eric Milligan
Congratulations to former Hawks captain Eric and Helen on their engagement.
All at Hawks wish them both every happiness. (We also wish Eric was playing a bit more rugby – but that’s another matter.)
The League
It may be beyond Hawks to win a 4th title but given that only 13 points (roughly equivalent to 3 wins!) separates 1st and 8th in the league – never say never. But our realistic targets might be top 3 and a good run (i.e. win) the Scottish Cup.
Come on the Hawks!
