(These may be the views of Glasgow Hawks)
The Nails
Heriots Rugby are our opposition today and were the conquerors of Hawks in the first league match of the season by 41 – 22.
It was a match that could have gone either way up until the unfortunate sending-off of a Hawks’ player. Although not entirely innocent the review of the video footage certainly confirmed he was not very guilty!
Although Heriots have shown some inconsistent form this season they are an exciting side and well coached by the highly rated Bob McKillop who is supported by son of Anniesland, George Breckenridge. Their battle of wits with our two Davys (Wilson and Coby) adds an intriguing additional layer to this afternoon’s contest.
Polite Hawks Players
You knew this all along, but it was reassuring to have it confirmed that Hawks players are amongst the most polite. The evidence for this came in last week’s match against Melrose. As a Border’s ruffian was sent from the pitch for swearing we could take great comfort from the obvious implication that none of the 19 Hawks’ even thought about uttering an oath. Well done chaps – the sort of standards one expects at Annielsand.
Summer Rugby
We spent weeks debating the merits of summer rugby a while back only to find that it is now with us. The first 9 weeks of league rugby have been played in conditions that could be described as positively balmy. Even last Saturday with a short summer shower in the first half it finished in glorious sunshine. (Note - One exasperated supporter was heard to say during the first half “a wet ball is mair difficult to catch – no impossible!”)
The better weather might be contributing to the much more expansive game-plan that Hawks have adopted, and it certainly is adding to the entertainment.
Cocktails – Tonight.
Club Tropicanniesland opens tonight for business. Those in need of translation – pay a fiver and get a free cocktail from the professionally run cocktail bar (a cherry in your beer?) and something called a disco until 1am. (I’m sure discos were things they had in the 60s).
Ian Leighton
Persuaded by old friends to come out of retirement and turn out for GHK last week, former Hawks captain Leights, is left to rue the persuasive tones of Cammy Little and others. Two nights in hospital and an operation to re-attach his patella tendon might just be enough persuasion to make his retirement final.
We wish him a speedy recuperation.
We also have a reserved seat for him at Anniesland.
David Williams
It was great to see Taff back at Anniesland last week after a recent operation and on the road to recovery. He has featured at Heriots matches in the past – might he may be slightly more subdued if here today? Somehow I doubt it as his passion for Hawks runs very deep.
Hawks Under 16s
A top of the table clash against GHA takes place Sunday 28th at 2.00pm at Anniesland. This is a team drawn from 10 different schools and coached with real commitment by Jimmy Gossman and Gordon McCallum. Why not support the next generation?
