Readers may recall a previous story involving two trophies found In Andy and Anne Little's(Cammy's parents)' loft
These trophies had originally been in the safe custody of Andy's uncle when he was secretary of the Milngavie Highland Games back in the early 1950s
The silver dishes were to be presented at the 1952 Milngavie Games to David Gracie and Willie Jack in recognition of them being selected to represent Great Britain at the 1952 Olympics held In Helsinki ,this being the Games where the immortal Emil Zatopek won the 5000 metres,10,000 metres and Marathon -a feat that has never been emulated. His training methods were superhuman for his generation and sometimes he even went out running carrying his wife Dana(also an Olympic athlete) on his shoulders
David was selected in the 400 metres hurdles reaching the semi final and only just missing out on the final whilst Willie Jack of Victoria Park went in the 100 metres
Willie in common with other Victoria Park sprinters of that era was coached by the great ex professional spinter Willie MacFarlane who had won Powderhall twice from scratch
Willie Jack reached the semi final of the 100 metres recording 10.7 sec.In the build up to the Olympics Willie beat one Norris McWhirter at the Triangular International held in Dunoon the same Norris McWhirter who went on to found the Guinness Book of Records
However to go full circle Andy suddenly recalled that Willie was the same Willie Jack who had been a neighbour in Scotstounhill all these years ago and he actually encouraged Andy to take up rugby and just like all the above the rest is history
With the help of Doug Gillon Athletics correspondent of the Herald we have managed to track down both David and Willie
David is a retired Vet and lives in the Barnton area of Edinburgh and Willie has now retired to West Kilbride
The trophies have now been presented albeit it 54 years late.
