Glasgows team for grand old match

Tomorrow sees the continuation of the world's oldest inter district rugby match. The first Inter City was hosted by Glasgow Accies in 1871.at their first home Burnbank situated next to Gt Western Road just east of Kelvinbridge a ground that was to subsequently be used by Glasgow Rangers.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Sean Lineen has named his squad of 22 to face Edinburgh Rugby in the Magners League at Hughenden tomorrow (Friday 22 December, kick off 7.30pm). The squad sees both prop Euan Murray and scrum half Sam Pinder return from injury (heel and shoulder respectively) as the team look to carry on the form from last week’s win against Narbonne in the European Challenge Cup.

Sean Lineen said: “We’ve had to name a squad as we have a number of injuries, some of which are touch-and-go, that if one player is out, it effects two or three different positions and we want to get it right.

“Edinburgh are going into this game as favourites and they’ve been the flagship team in Scotland for a number of years. We’re going for our sixth home win in a row and coming off the back of that gutsy win last weekend in France, I believe the squad have another good performance in them for tomorrow’s game. The last time we played Edinburgh here in Glasgow, we came away with an impressive victory [46-6] so hopefully the crowd will be in good Christmas spirit and full voice to cheer us onto another significant result.”

Tomorrow’s game marks a milestone for Warriors scrum half Graeme Beveridge who will make his 150th appearance for Glasgow.

He made his debut for Scotland when he replaced former Glasgow captain Andy Nicol during the second Test of the 2000 summer tour to New Zealand, and has gone on to win a further five caps for his country as well as playing 15 times for Scotland A and captaining not only Glasgow but also Scotland U19 and U21.

He will be presented with a commemorative quaich to mark the occasion following tomorrow’s game.
