A CLIFF HANGER

Currie could make it the biggest day in their 36-year-history on Saturday when, if results go their way, they could be crowned Scotland’s champion club.

The current leaders of Premier Division 1 travel to Goldenacre to meet Heriot’s in the Edinburgh derby. That match kicks-off at 2pm.

Other fixtures which could have a bearing on the destination of the title see second placed Ayr – who currently trail Currie by two points – away to Glasgow Hawks at Old Anniesland, while third placed Watsonians – six points adrift – are at home to their neighbours, Boroughmuir. Those two fixtures will be played under lights and kick-off at 3pm.

Now here’s the maths. A Currie victory with a four-try bonus point would eliminate both Watsonians and Heriot’s from the title race. If Currie win with that bonus they will be champions UNLESS Ayr win, draw or score four tries and finish within seven points of Hawks in defeat.

Heriot’s, who currently trail Currie by seven points in fourth place, did win at Malleny Park earlier this season 32-15 and should they do the double on Saturday, their final league game on 13 January is away to . . . Ayr.

Defeat for Currie and Ayr on Saturday could also reopen the door for Watsonians, if they beat Boroughmuir. Watsonians’ final league game is . . . at home to Currie.

Jock Millican, secretary of the Premier One forum said: “It promises to be a fascinating finish to one of the most closely-contested league championships for some years.”

SRU President Andy Irvine will be at Goldenacre on Saturday accompanied by Rugby Services Manager Richard McGhee and the silverware.
