Nick Cox went over for Hawks' try against Ayr
Ayr's bid for Premiership glory was wrecked by former champions Glasgow Hawks, who edged to an 11-8 win in a dour and jittery battle at Old Anniesland.
Hawks looked the more urgent side during the disjointed opening exchanges and surged ahead with a try from prop Nick Cox following impressive work featuring Grant Strang and Gavin Mories.
Nick Lavelle confidently thumped over a penalty to get Ayr up and running and they kept up the momentum to create a well-worked try for Ryan Holland.
But two late penalties by substitute Mike Adamson swung the fortunes in favour of Hawks. Warriors' trialist Max Evans was the sponsor's man-of-the-match.

Currie claimed their first Premiership crown with a clinical 39-26 demolition of Heriot's at Goldenacre.
Ally Warnock shook off a shaky start to emerge as Currie's main man, completing a full-house of a try, four conversions, a penalty and drop-goal.
Heriot's speed merchant Marc Teague claimed a four-try volley which, ultimately, counted for nothing.
The other Currie touchdowns came from Andy McMahon (2), John Cox and Kevin McShane, while Graham Wilson kicked the rest of Heriot's points.
Watsonians were in cruise control at Myreside to sweep aside the challenge of Boroughmuir 45-22 in an entertaining Premiership tussle.
Dougie Brown led the charge with a hat-trick of tries, the others coming from Steve Lawrie, Matt Coupar (2) and Will Rowley, with Scott Stumbled adding five conversions.
Stuart McGee, Scott Hadden (2) and Graham McCallum went over in reply for Muir, Hadden also converting once.
Two tries by Graeme Dodds acted as the springboard for Melrose's 27-17 victory in the Borders derby with Hawick at Mansfield Park.
The other Rose counter came from Mark Robertson, while Scott Wight was in great form with the boot to land all three conversions and a penalty brace in this Premiership match.
Rory Hutton offered most resistance for the Greens, claiming a try and two penalties. Graham Hogg was also on target twice in vain for the home side.
There were yellow cards for Alec Jessop of Melrose and Hawick's Nick McTaggart.
Aberdeen Grammar's match with Dundee High FP was postponed.
