A win at Melrose for GHK meant the Dougie Forbes Trophy being brought
back to Glasgow from this fixture which is over 40 years old.
An early meet was enlivened by a bus journey featuring team favourite
DVD, Anchorman. Captain, Cammy Little, initiated an unusual warm up
where failure to catch a high ball meant 2 fingers of Port.
Suspiciously Jamie McKinnon seemed to drop the ball in order to sup
the Port but followed up with a barnstorming performance at number 8.
His try saw him carry several defenders over the line.
A fast moving first half saw Melrose just ahead 7 to 5.
GHK took sustenance from the generous half time Borders hospitality
of cheese and oatcakes washed down with Port and Cherry Brandy!
A long run by Ewan Thow saw him score to edge GHK ahead 10 to 7.
Although the match was played in a good spirit, Melrose did not want
to lose and the last 15 minutes saw fierce attack and defence from
both sides. The killer blow was delivered as their 10 saw his
intended kick to touch gathered on the full by speedster Rory Love
who dotted down under the posts. His attempted drop goal conversion
bounced off the selfsame posts to the sound of the final whistle.
Thanks to Jake Love for efficient Team Manager duties; Presidente and
Memsahib Hugh for travelling down and Past President Stewart Macaulay
for touch judging.
Well done too to all the players who chose to play rugby when it must
have been tempting to stay in bed for a long lie.
The day was rounded off by an excellent game of shoulders in their
clubhouse and a court session convened by Judge Little on the bus.

Footnote from Eric Hugh
In case Scottie somehow forgets to mention it, today he played the full game against Melrose. On the field with him were the sons of not one but six former players he had played with earlier in his career with Glasgow High and GHK, namely Little, Jerden, Thow, McCoombe, Love and Hugh
