Glasgow Hawks U 15s, 19 – Melrose U 15s, 5
This was the sort of game that the boys really needed. The opposition were bigger and committed and the young hawks new that they were in a game right from the start.
It was Melrose who had the chance to put the first points on the board with only a few minutes gone when they won a penalty which they opted to kick but didn’t score from. There was a real struggle for superiority and after a sublime move in the backs Max Martin scored a stunning try which was converted by Chris Rhodes. Without dominating proceedings the Hawks boys defended well and were (unlike last time) really up to the challenge. Unfortunately (just like last time) there were errors in judgement and too many cheap penalties given away. However the second try was not long in coming and after 12 minutes Rory Taylor crossed the line and Chris converted. The remainder of the half was a see-saw battle, with Hawks gong in at half time 14-0 ahead.
In the second half Hawks started very strongly and were unlucky not to go over almost immediately but indiscipline close to the Melrose line led to yet another penalty being awarded against them. Melrose came back strongly. Their big pack, in particular the number 8, made a big impression. Their efforts went rewarded with a try after Hawks had infringed again and from the tap they went over from close range. They failed to convert.
Unlike last time heads did not go down and despite losing Kenny “the bull” McGowan to yet another shoulder injury the boys maintained their forward momentum and Finn Campbell- Young made a miraculous catch and then side stepped a couple of Borderers and scored.
Kenny had to have his shoulder put back in under anaesthetic and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
Hawks pressed for the bonus point try but it wasn’t to be and the final score was 19 – 5.
Next up, Stirling County. This is the game that will make or break the season. Win it and chances are that the boys will qualify for the semis; lose and the season is all but over. No pressure then.
The KO next Sunday is at 2:00pm at New Anniesland. It would be great for the boys if the club turned out in numbers to support them, I can assure you that the type of rugby that they play will not disappoint.
