Whilst watching the Mighty 2s last night you saw on a heavy pitch some impressive speed from young guns Rory Love,Sean Murray and Chris Bruce and not so young gun Stuart Low not to mention our speedy snapper Mark Oatey who had these jpegs back to the Ed before midnight
This allowed the memory to stray to some of the fast men of Hughenden
I am not sure if one of the Chariots of Fire Eric Liddell ever played rugby at Hughenden-(he did play at New Anniesland) but W.M Campbell certainly did.
W Menzies Campbell-Hillhead HSFP-Victoria Park AAC-Garscube Harriers-GUAC now leader of the Lib Dems was probably the fastest man out of Hughenden.-even allowing for Thom Evans.
Ming Campbell a product of Hilhead High School was an outstanding athlete by any standards. He represented Scotland and Britain, and in successive years 1963 and 1964 won the Scottish 100yds,220 yds and 440yds
He represented Britain at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and even recorded 47.5 for 440 yds on the grass of Goldenacre
His clashes with Mike Hildrey the Balfron Bullet were the stuff of legends
His real benchmark came in San Jose California when he set a UK record of 10.2 for 100metres whilst a student at Stanford University
Come on Sean more speedwork for the Warriors
