This Fridays David Gilmore Memorial match at Old Anniesland between
Glasgow Accies and GHK is no mean fixture
Records show that this match was first played in December 1885 (three
years before the first Old Firm Rangers v Celtic match was played in
1888 )
The term Old Firm refers to the rivalry between the Scottish football teams Celtic F.C. and Rangers F.C.
The expression derives from Celtic's first game in 1888, which was played against Rangers. A newspaper report stated that both sets of players "got on so well that you would believe that they were old firm friends."
On this occasion Glasgow Accies 2nd xv played Glasgow H.S.F.P 1st xv
(Accies were already an established club having been formed in 1866)
Glasgow H.S F.P. had to borrow two players from the now defunct Clydesdale and Accies borrowed a chap called Cochrane from West
The first time Glasgow Accies played the other half of GHK namely
Kelvinside Accies was in 1888
This Fridays match at Old Anniesland keeps alive this long tradition and will k.o at 6.45 p.m.
