Currie U 15s, 5 – Glasgow Hawks U 15s, 15
It was Baltic at Malleny park, things were not looking good when 10 mins before KO a hail storm came on, that was soon forgotten about however when the game got underway.
Hawks won the toss and chose to play with the gale at their backs. In the first few minutes the Currie boys tried to assert themselves through their massive pack, The young Hawks stood firm and started to get the better of things with excellent kicking from hand from Patrick Bell and stout defence from the whole team. The break through came after 15 mins when Jonny Byrne-Leitch went over for an unconverted try. The boys had lots or possession and for a while it looked like there might be no reward for all their efforts then Chris Rhodes stepped up and stroked over a penalty. Scrum half rory Henderson played a great game and gave the boys just what they needed, Cammy Crozier struck against the head and Rory somehow fond a gap and went over for a fine try which Chris converted. The half time whistle went and the boys went in 15-0 ahead. Now the real work started.
Playing into a howling wind the boys knew that they needed to keep their shape. The Currie tactics were clear – use the big pack and grind away.
The Hawks pack stood firm and the whole team tackled like demons. Finn Campbell- Young and Jonny Byrne-Leitch were both supberb under the high balls that were sent there way, Aidan McCall-Hagan was a rock in defence and superb in counter attack. The Currie boys ground out a try with 15 mins to go and we knew we were in a game. The last few minutes were tense but the defence held firm and the boys were there.
So, next week sees the squad move onto Murrayfield for the final. If you want entertained you should come along and see the boys play Boroughmuir in the final.
Finally on behalf of all of us a big thanks to the Big Hawks for making us so welcome yesterday at the game, the boys really enjoyed picking up their medals at half time.
