SRU may sue Carruthers

A ROW between Murrayfield bosses and Edinburgh Rugby reached new heights today with the governing body threatening to sue the club and/or co-owner Bob Carruthers.

Documents warning of the legal action which have been sent to Carruthers' lawyer by SRU counterparts and forwarded to the Evening News make clear the level of animosity between the two parties.

The letter states: "I have already sent you examples of the defamatory statements that have been made and I see no need to repeat them in this letter.

"We will however, in conjunction with the SRU, be carrying out a full review of all statements made and shall thereafter decide whether to pursue ERL (Edinburgh Rugby Limited) and/or Mr Carruthers personally for the defamatory statements made.

"You may expect to hear from us further."

In a subsequent communication the SRU lawyers, in referring to comments made in the Evening News by Bob Carruthers correct a reference to these being "helpful" to "unhelpful". There is also a correction in regard to the fact these comments were made by "Bob not Alec" Carruthers.

In a bullish response Bob Carruthers appears to be laughing off the matter which has escalated in the wake of the demise of the Borders team. Last week Mr Carruthers claimed he had tried to mount a rescue package for the Borders team but was not taken seriously by the SRU.

Carruthers, in his response to the lawyer's letter, also made available to the Evening News, said: "I love the fact that the e-mail objecting to me criticising the volume of accountants at the SRU is copied to, er,
