Scotland under-17 made a fine start to the Millfield International tournament in Somerset this afternoon with a 16-3 victory over their French counterparts.
This result follows hard on the heels of Scotland under-18s’ first ever win in France last weekend.

The Scots, who recovered from an early penalty deficit, replied through three penalties and a conversion from stand-off Andrew Lundie and a well-worked, second-half try in the corner by prop Nicky Little.

Head coach Grant McKelvey said: “It was a solid start and a very workmanlike performance.

“For the first time in my experience we were more physical than the French in midfield. The French seemed fazed by the ferocity of our work at contact early in the game where we must have turned them over half a dozen times, one-on-one.”

McKelvey praised the high tackle count of Musselburgh openside flanker Michael Maltman, the leadership of Stuart McInally and the contributions in both attack and defence of centre Alex Dunbar and Tom Brown at full-back.
“Ground conditions were hard but, happily, it seems that we’ve no injuries to speak of, so we’ll rest up for the remainder of today and then begin our preparations for our next match, against England, on Thursday night,” McKelvey added.
