EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS REPORTS ON TOMORROW'S CUP TIE

Vernon can land jackpot for Stew-Mel
BILL LOTHIAN
STEWART'S-MELVILLE will wait on the availability of Borders apprentice Richie Vernon before settling on a side to face Glasgow Hawks in tomorrow's Scottish Cup quarter-final at Inverleith.

For Hawks the match is one to be approached with some trepidation having lost 21-7 on the final day of last season. Since then, however, Stew-Mel have undergone a transformation in terms of playing personnel though coach Grant Mackenzie remains convinced they retain the capability to upset the former champions.

"If Richie Vernon is able to turn out depending on how much of a part he plays from off the bench at Llanelli tonight that could be key.

"With adequate supplies of ball we can unleash the likes of Edinburgh apprentice Dave McCall to do a bit of damage. It has been a long and difficult season back in Division Two but I'm sure that will be set aside for a crack at Hawks in a match where we have everything to gain and little to lose."

Stewart's-Melville: R Borthwick, G Sharp, D McCall, C Goudie, A Cox, S Kerr, S Goudie, A Davidson, S McMurchy, A Statham, S Dalgleish, S Brewster, R Vernon or R Doneghan, P Hendry, P McLean.
