Hawks show ominous form with try-feast
GARY HEATLY AT INVERLEITH
Stewart's Melville 31
Glasgow Hawks 89
GLASGOW Hawks powered past Stewart's-Melville at Inverleith to move with ease into the last four of the National Cup.
On this form a fifth appearance at Murrayfield is beckoning for the Old Anniesland side. They tore apart their Premier Two hosts from the outset, scoring four converted tries in the opening quarter.
Back row John Fitzpatrick, second row Niall Caddell, winger Stewart Smith and scrum-half Kenny Sinclair scored two tries apiece with the visitors scoring five others, including one by back-row Ally Maclay against his former side.
Stand-off Murray Strang really put the boot in to Stew-Mel, converting 12 of the 13 scores.
"Putting 89 points on any team takes some doing and we played some good stuff in the first half. We were a bit sloppy after the break but that always happens when you have such a big lead and we are looking forward to the next round," said Hawks coach David Wilson.
In the first minute Strang missed a relatively simple penalty but the ease in which Sinclair set up Fitzpatrick for the opening try four minutes later signalled a long afternoon for the home side. Fitzpatrick's form just seems to keep improving while the back three of Rory Kerr, Smith and Stevie Gordon look menacing.
