CONSTANT heavy rain throughout the day marred the turnout at the Orkney Rugby Football Club's 40th Anniversary tournament at the Pickaquoy pitches this afternoon but the comradeship of the sport shone through.

In the Grand Final of the XV-a-side event, the Penguins visiting team beat Orkney RFC 17-0 in a tight match filled with excitement which was cut to twelve and a half minutes each way because of the conditions.

Quite apart from the flair and intensity shown in each of the earlier match, there was also great novelty appeal in the West v East veterans game, which featured many former players who are now in their 60s. That ended in a 7-5 victory for West.

The results in the early games in the tournament, which was played during the afternoon, were: Kirkwall 0, Westray 6; West 0, Penguins Chairman's XV 36; Isles 0, ORFC 46; President's XV 12, East 12; Westray 0- ORFC 15; West 5, President's XV 19; Kirkwall 27, Isles 0; Penguins 29- East 0 and East 12, West 5.
