GLASGOW ACCIES 2nd 26, STRATHENDRICK 2nd 12.
SCOTTISH 2nd XV LEAGUE, DIVISION 5 WEST.
Endrick 2nds travelled to New Anniesland for a rescheduled league fixture
against Glasgow Accies 2nds on Saturday. The few spectators were treated
to an open running game between two well-matched sides controlled by - in
his own words - a very occasional referee. John Campbell of Accies made
his contribution to the game by allowing it to flow, by playing advantage
as necessary and by letting everyone know what his decisions were. Perhaps
he should be coaching other whistlers who aspire to greater things.
And on top of all that the sun shone throughout! From an Endrick point of
view it was a grand day apart from the result and even there the Fintry
men outscored the opposition in the second half - by two points.
Accies took the lead after only two minutes when their pack won a scrum
near the Endrick line and their No. 8 picked up and was driven over for
an unconverted try.
Endrick quickly put that setback behind and had a long spell of pressure
in the home 22. Unfortunately their best efforts produced only a series of
penalties and on the day the spirit of the game clearly decreed that all
penalties should be run. It made for good entertainment but it left Endrick
vulnerable to the counter and in 24 minutes Accies broke down the left to
score their second try, this one converted.
Two minutes before the break Accies inside centre collected the ball in his
own half and broke away to score at the posts to leave Endrick with a 19-0
deficit going into the second half.
It took them only two minutes after the restart to cut into that margin,
Stuart McGill crossing for a try converted by Euan Willder. Endrick had
their tails up put they were shaken only two minutes later when Accies
inside centre again broke clear well inside his own half to race upfield
for his second try.
The Fintry men kept at it and in 16 minutes, with the Accies all over the
place, Andy Bilsland who impressed all through with some positive running
sprinted in for a well deserved try.
It looked for a time as if Endrick could still save the game but eight
minutes from the end Accies replacement centre in his own half eluded a
couple of tackles before racing away for Accies fifth and final try.
