In June, I will be joining 30 members of HBOS plc's Group Internal Audit (GIA) team (where I work) to spend a weekend in the Fort William area. We will ascend Ben Nevis and carry out some litter clearance en route, in support of the work of the John Muir Trust, who own the mountain. At 1,344m (4,406ft) Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK.
The ascent of the mountain and the associated conservation work will be used as a vehicle to raise funds for the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team. LMRT was set up in the 1960s by local climbers to help fellow climbers in difficulties on the mountains of Lochaber and especially Ben Nevis. It was and still is today entirely made up of unpaid volunteers.
In order to personalise the Challenge, I plan to walk from Milngavie to Fort William in 5 days, following the West Highland Way for 95 miles. Following the ascent of Ben Nevis, I will then walk from Fort William to Inverness in 4 or 5 days, following the Great Glen Way, a distance of 73 miles. Therefore, over the course of 11 days I plan to walk 168 miles and climb the UK's highest mountain!
I have set up a fundraising website at www.justgiving.com/rickyslongwalk.
I would be very grateful for any support I get.
Cheers,
Ricky
