MINI MARATHON SUCCESS FOR SCOTTISH STARS
25th April 2007

This year's trip gave Scotland only the 2nd race winner since Scottish District teams started going to the Mini Marathon in 2001.

Max Aitchison's (Victoria Park City of Glasgow/Glasgow Hawks/Accies) win in the boy's 11/12 year old race has only been matched by Derek Hawkins (Kilbarchan) in the 13/14 race in 2004.

Other medal winners were Beth Potter (Victoria Park City of Glasgow), 3rd in the 15/16/17 girls' race and Callum Hawkins (Kilbarchan), who kept up the fine record of the Hawkins brothers in the event, finishing 2nd in 13/14 boys event.

In the wheelchair event, talented young Scottish athlete Colette Martin was the first girl home in the 11-13 year old age group and 3rd girl overall.

There were other excellent performances by a number of Scottish athletes but the Mini Marathon event is all about taking part and being involved in the massive occasion that is the London Marathon.

With the Mini Marathon races concluding by mid morning, the young athletes were able to avoid the hotter part of the day, which affected many of the full marathon competitors.

Both Max Aitchison and Neil Gourley(Ronnie's son) were in the U-13 Scotland boys team competing in the London Mini Marathon run over the last 2.65 miles of the course early on Sunday morning. There were 6 in each team and Scotland also had teams at U-15 and U-17 (boys and girls).

The Scots teams all did very well - although there were no team prizes as such. There were approximately 300 athletes in each race. As you know Max did outstandingly well to win the race and Neil came in 30th place which wasn't bad either.

Max is a Glasgow Academy P7 pupil who plays for the Accies Mini Rugby section where his dad also coaches.
As you'll know Neil was part of the S1 Hawks squad who were at Murrayfield last month in the national finals.
