AGEING ROCKERS ROCK ON

Following on from the visits of Country star Leann Rimes and the Israeli Cricket Team Anniesland continues to attract international stars when recently rock n roll legend Tommy Allsup pitched up to New Anniesland
The event was graced by a range of Anniesland's ageing rockers such as Murdo(I have been to Lubbock Texas) Beaton-Accie rocker Twitcher Calder--Big Doug(I have seen the Buddy Holly story 40 times and never really agreed to the formation of GHK)Sommerville and Ally 2.19 Johnston -any Hawks supporter who can say he has run 2hrs 19 m for a marathon does me and should be an inspiration to Half Iron Man Hamiton
Big Tommy played and talked to the devotees about his time with Buddy Holly and the Crickets having first met Buddy at Norman Petty's Sun Records studio in Clovis New Mexico all the way to "the day the music died" in Iowa

Tommy Allsup

Tommy Allsup (Buddy Holly) and Kevin Montgomery have announced an upcoming tour that will include dates in various parts of England and Scotland. The tour kicks off on Monday, June 4th, at The Greys in Brighton England.
Back in 1959, guitarist Tommy Allsup lost the flip of a coin with Ritchie Valens for a seat on a plane, and the rest as they say, 'is history'. It was the ill-fated Buddy Holly plane which went on to crash shortly after take-off, killing Buddy, Ritchie and the Big Bopper.

Tommy was the guitarist with Buddy's band on songs like 'It's So Easy', 'Heartbeat', 'Wishing' which of course explains his link to Kevin Montgomery. Kevin's dad wrote 'Heartbeat' and 'Wishing' with Buddy, back in the days before The Crickets, and Kevin has always featured those songs, along with others, in his set when he tours in the United Kingdom.

'An Evening with Tommy Allsup and Kevin Montgomery' will begin acoustically with Kevin and Tommy, playing, singing, sharing stories, and even taking questions from the audience. For the second part of the show they will be joined by Danny White on bass and Paul Griffith on drums to help rock through some of the songs on which has Tommy played during his life-long career.

After Holly's death, Tommy Allsup went into producing the great Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and worked with the likes of Willie Nelson, Bobby Vee, Johnny Burnette, Julie London and Vickie Carr and played with and produced Asleep At The Wheel.

At 75 years of age this is Tommy's first tour of the UK, and first ever visit to Scotland, it will be an un-missable opportunity to see one of the great guitarists with Nashville's finest singer/songwriter.

AND IAIN CHALKIE ANDERSON

Hi Kevin!

Just a long lost quickie to say thanks very much again for the great time you,Tommy and the lads gave us on that lovely evening of 8th June at your Glasgow gig.The newspaper reports all gave it a top star rating,eg......Tommy - "unassumingly splendid raconteur that he is, at the age of 76 Allsup also remains a formidable guitarist.......his talent for apt embellishment gave Kevin Montgomery's Tennessee Girl a classic edge......the Holly connection was richly celebrated with Montgomery contributing particularly fine versions of True Love Ways and the earlier Buddy and Bob song Soft Place in My Heart."

Tommy is such a nice guy and commands such an amazing presence. As a long time(very long time!) Buddy fan I have to say that although he was the"star" people like Tommy materially contributed to his success and it says a lot that someone like you has the energy and talent to identify, uncover and broadcast this without looking for any great return yourself - you only sang about 3 of your own songs and dedicated the night to Buddy,Tommy and your Dad..........indirectly though I'm sure this tour has won you many new admirers.

Regards to Tommy and many many thanks again for that magical evening.

See you in January.

Sincerely

Alastair(and pals Doug,Jim and Greig - apologies from Hugh for being unable to attend(gutted!)

PS - will report to our guru DJ, Iain Anderson, who plays you a lot([email protected]) when he gets back from holiday.
