Both clubs signed the letter challenging the clubs of England to meet them on the field under the Rugby rules which led to the birth of the international game and both clubs were also present at the meeting held in the Glasgow Academy that saw the formation of the Scottish Football Union later renamed the Scottish Rugby Union
On the pitch however Hawks struggled to beat a lively West side 26-19
