The Muir the Merrier
Our first guests in the new championship season are Boroughmuir. Despite some injury problems, they started the season with a fine home win against Melrose and will wish to set out their stall as Championship contenders this season. They had a very peculiar up and down season last term, at one point leading the league and then a losing sequence set in. However, they are a strengthened squad from last season and always play good quality rugby that entertains.
Full Bhoona at Curri
No need to dwell on last week’s performance – it was as bad as it sounds. However, there is a determination in the squad to improve, and quickly. A few of our experienced players returning from injury will help.
Club Development Manager
With the assistance of the Bank of Ireland, the 3 associated schools and the SRU, Hawks now have a full-time development officer in place – Grant Talbot. The main focus of his post will be to support schools, the mini and Youth sections in developing new young talent. Work has started in local schools at the same time and he already has a plan for a mini world cup involving local schools during the October week. He can be contacted at [email protected].
Schools Visits
We will also continue with our programme of visits from schools parties. At the moment, the Hyndland cheering section are due to return on 29th September and we look forward to seeing them again as they provide the most vocal support of the season for the hawks team.
World Cup Squad
While we are all a wee bit disappointed that Graham Morrison and Steve Swindall did not make it into the squad I think all Hawks supporters will believe that Fergus Thomson’s inclusion is well merited. He joins Euan Murray and Andy Henderson who were both popular Hawks players as well as Rory Lamont and John Barclay who both had brief spells in the Hawks set-up. Good luck to them, and of course, Frank and the rest of the squad. The first match V Portugal is on ITV 4 at 9.00pm Sunday.
Joker Jackpot
The popular Joker Jackpot is back – under new management. The newly established players’ committee has taken on responsibility for this. So please give them your support and buy tickets.
Mini and Youth Rugby
If you are aware of any young person interested in taking up rugby there are plenty of opportunities through the Anniesland family. Mini rugby operates at both Old and New Anniesland on a Sunday from Midday and the senior school age groups start a little later. Details - Grant Talbot ([email protected])
or on the Hawks website (www.glasgowhawks.com).
