Glasgow Club Rugby - Week 2 Preview

By Phall

Hawks will hope to get back on track on Saturday
I think the most disappointing thing about picking up the papers last week was the limited coverage in both the Sunday Herald and Scotland on Sunday.
Okay the Hawks result was the most disappointing thing, but I had expected a defeat although not this size of defeat. As to the coverage of the SHE things improved on Monday in both the Herald and the Scotsman but with RWC '07 starting this weekend it'll simply see the club game vanish from the sports pages. The other problem is that all ties are on at the same time as Scotland play Hearts at Hampden.

Premier One

Glasgow Hawks v Boroughmuir
Last season Hawks went to Muir and shipped 51 points having actually led for a bit. Deja vu all over again? But in the return tie Hawks murdered Muir 15-14.

Muir have certainly started with an edgy win against Melrose but home advantage and hurt pride hopefully should see another narrow repeat.

Watsonians v GHA
GHA took an absolute doing against County last week a game they had to get something from if they are to avoid becoming Premier 1's whipping boys, kinky!

Watsonians will be reeling from Hawick's last minute come back last week at the Mansfield coming away without a bonus. At Myreside they'll pick up all 4 points and a try bonus with ease, leaving GHA to nurse their wounds.

Stirling County v Ayr
Ayr's narrow defeat at home to Dundee HSFP will have left their attempt to improve on last year's second place in a bit of disarray. If they are to mount a serious challenge then points from places like Bridgehaugh are an absolute necessity.

County showed great form last week against GHA but I think that Ayr will grind out a narrow and difficult away win. But unlikely to see a try bonus here.

Premier Two

Cartha Queen's Park v Stewart's Melville FP
Smellies home defeat last week to Jed has surprised many who thought that this young talented side would bounce back up. However, they have lost some of their best players to other Edinburgh sides.

That said Cartha QP took a right kicking at Haddington and may not have the strength to compete in this league, a pity. Stew Mel to kick start their season.

Biggar v Hillhead-Jordanhill
Another weekend another Glasgow derby. Hills were at home to West gaining a bonus point but losing west End bragging rights as they lost by two points.

As predicted Biggar disposed of Selkirk relatively easily and should hammer Hills at Hartreemill.

Hamilton v Selkirk
Selkirk have a difficult trip to a buoyant Hamilton side who should take a bit out of their performance at Musselburgh. This should simply go with home advantage.

West of Scotland v Kelso
If West are to bring back the glory days then they have to dispose of the likes of Kelso at home. They should boosted with 4 points from a tough derby that never really allowed players to show their best, they should be able to put on a better show for the home support who hopefully will have decided to attend Burnbrae rather then the Lithuania game.

Premier Three

Ardrossan Academicals v Livingston
Well just as well I didn't get that mortgage. Ardrossan murdered Murrayfield last week and sit at the top of the league with 5 points. Playing a Livingston side who conceded almost as many points as Accies scored it doesn't take much to predict a home win with bonus.

Kirkcaldy v Irvine
Kirkcaldy lost the Fife derby although they picked up a bonus point. The Blues are no longer the force they were a few years back but they are more then a match for Irvine, especially at Beveridge Park. Irvine may have picked up a try bonus but the significant fact was the 49 points conceded to Perthshire.
