Moseley in credit

Full marks to the directors of Moseley Rugby Club for trying hard.

Creditors owed money from the club's former incarnation seven years ago received cheques last week amounting to 40 per cent of their debt, with the promise of a further 15 per cent to come.

In the next post they received a letter from Moseley's new management suggesting that, after such a long time, they might simply cut their losses and send the money back where it could be re-invested in the club's coffers.

It was a good try and some of the smaller creditors have indeed decided that their hearts really are in Moseley Rugby Club and have returned the money.

It would be nice to imagine that a similarly altruistic attitude might be displayed by the larger creditors, the likes of the Inland Revenue, Customs and Excise and multi-national companies. On the other hand, get in the real world.

The future looks increasingly bright for Moseley, though, and that has to be good news for Birmingham and West Midlands rugby.

Having got into dreadful financial trouble by flirting with the professional game seven years ago the club came within a whisker of being sold and moving to Oxford. The fact that such an outcome was averted says much for the guts and determination of ordinary members who battled to keep their club in Birmingham.

The 2005/06 season is fast approaching and, with a new ground at Billesley Common, the facilities are in place to begin the long process of returning Moseley to the top flight of English rugby union. That day cannot come a moment too soon.
