This season was one of the most successful in many years. The first xv had an excellent record of Played 14 Won 11 Drawn 1 and Lost 3.This was a great effort from the players led by the new coaching team of David Ross and Ali Macara. Unfortunately the sole promotion spot was just missed by 2 points. Therefore another year will have to be spent in Division 5 West.
A good run was also had this year in the Scottish Cup and Bowl. A victory over Loch Lomond was followed by a loss to St Andrews University and entry to the Bowl competition. GHK beat Trinity then lost by only 3 points to Greenock Wanderers who went on to the final at Murrayfield. This showed yet again that GHK are capable of playing at a higher level. The SRU AGM later this month will look at regionalisation for not next season but the season after. Hopefully this will improve our opportunities to compete further up the leagues.
Our success this year was due to a team of very skilled and committed players and our excellent new coaching duo. Our players included a good mixture of experience and young players fresh out of school. This was reflected in the player awards at our successful rugby dinner.GHK Player of the Year- Stuart Pollok
GHK Young Player of the Year- Rory Love
GHK Most Improved Player of the Year- Jason Carlin
I would like to thank David Ross and Ali Macara who worked so hard at training and considerably upped the player skill levels through the season. Many of the players played for Hawks 2nd xv and Ollie jones featured in the Hawks 1st xv. Once again GHK benefited from our close links with Hawks including many of the players being involved with Peter Wright and Rob Ackermann’s sessions.
Away from league business GHK toured to Ireland to play our old friends Instonians. Although a strong Irish team won back the Balmaha trophy the benefits of touring and team bonding outweighed any loss. Silverware was won at the end of the season with the plate being won at the University sevens. This followed an appearance in the final of the Helensburgh sevens.
GHK look forward to next season’s League and Scottish Cup games with confidence and anticipation. The players appreciate supporters watching and you are always assured of a warm welcome at Old Anniesland.
Scott Inglis
GHK Director of Rugby.
