Oban 7 GHK 60
For the first time this season GHK demonstrated the excellent rugby they are capable of in seeing off what was not a bad Oban team by 60 points to 7. After an extended bus journey (why did the local council decided to cut the hedges on the A82 on September weekend Saturday?), there was concern that it would take some time shake off the effects. It did, four minutes to be exact; Murray Wiseman touching down and Bill Criggie adding the conversion. Ali Forbes then maintained his excellent try scoring rate with one on ten minutes and a second on sixteen, Bill Criggie converting the latter for 0-19. Four minutes later John Shannon scored the first of what was to be a hat trick on the day then, on thirty minutes, the referee awarded a penalty try following a high tackle on Stuart Hunter. Bill Criggie converted to make the score 31-0 in GHK’s favour at half time.
Half time team talks were given and, unfortunately, Oban’s must have been better as they scored a converted try four minutes into the half. GHK responded with a try by Andy McTavish which preceded a lull in scoring until sixty-one minutes when Craig Gossman pirated Oban possession and ran from his own ‘22’ to score under the posts with Bill Criggie converting. John Shannon then completed his hat trick with scores on sixty-five and seventy-two minutes. John Lohar grabbed the final try with five minutes remaining, Bill Criggie again converting. The action wasn’t over however as Ali Forbes was carded for ‘foul and abusive language in the presence of miners’ – presumably of the coal variety?
Your correspondent has the final score as 7-60 though the referee reckons it was 64, either way an excellent result.
Then there was the bus home. It was slightly worrying that the residents of Inveraray were not at all put out by the sight of Ewan Thow wearing nothing but a short, red dress and trainers – though he was given special attention in the chip shop by a handsome young man behind the counter…………
