GHK 2nds v Paisley Match Report

Paisley 2nd XV 0 GHK 2nd XV 52. 29/09/07

With Cambuslang calling off during the week, the troops found themselves travelling west along the M8 to the Anchor ground to take on Paisley 2nds. Congratulations to Coco Fleming who must have passed his instruments flying exams as he touched down on time and without the help of being talked down by mobile phone.

A big thanks to Fraser Johnston for not letting us know he was ill and still in his bed. Flu by the sounds of it someone said but knowing the Johnston clan reports of a duff pint of lager could have been closer to the mark.

At first we thought that Shaggy had come out to the pitch for an early warm up by the number of flies that were in abundance but it transpired this is quite a common experience at the Paisley ground where tick and tsetse roam.

Great to see new faces and also to the guys who played out of position e.g. Charlie Dunlop at full back and Big Kenny O’Callaghan at second row. Thanks lads.

Paisley started the game and Mr. O’Callaghan called clearly and put his marker on the ball…………………DOH !!!! down it went and so did so the next seven restarts. Fines were applied of course but, showing the team spirit of the side and the code of fair play, Adam Johnston, playing at wing forward, caught the eighth restart and was promptly fined for showing off.
The backs started shifting the ball with speed; Big John Wilmot, Colin McGonnigle and Liam Mc Dermid causing Paisley problems and it wasn’t long before the score board was in action. Hard aggressive running from the three quarters soon ran in several tries but one incident sticks to mind.
McConnigle linked up with Liam after Tom Smith made a Townsend type break, one man to beat and three GHK players inside McGonnigle decided to run into touch, continued into the local corner shop and returned with a loaf. Subbed immediately and sent to the bin of shame, McGonnigle’s ears resounded to some horrendous abuse by his team mates. I believe one of them being something that chaps do when girlfriends or wives fall a sleep.

Terrific defence by GHK and all credit to Paisley who never gave up trying. Solid hits put in by Richard on the wing, John Wilmot, Tom Smith, Adam Johnston and Shaggy who went on for McGonnigle.

Lord Smeaton was introduced into the game, showing electric pace and handling skills but sadly the three forward passes and knock on culminated in a fines tally of £5.00. Unpaid, Lord Smeaton sloped off after the game proving accountants are not the best payers in the world.

Well played Coco and Ben Inglis who scored two good trys. The former not aware he had done this.
Credit to the front row who were up against some big opposition.

Next Saturday we play Accies and the code is kit in suitcases.
