2nd's v Accies Match Report
Glasgow Accies 2nd xv. 7 – GHK 2nd xv. 38.
Played at The Curling Pond, New Anniesland
It was bad enough Kenny O’Callaghan calling off on Thursday night with the excuse of moving house on Saturday but then the news filtered through that he had been spotted at Morrisons, Anniesland in a queue at the baker’s section waiting for the “How many pies can you eat in five minutes ?” competition. A disgrace… even to be spotted in a supermarket on a Saturday! A heavy fine will be imposed at the next game.
Good to see some old faces out again: Sandy Kennedy, Mathew Inglis and none other than Yoda, fresh from his feeding of the five thousand with one slab of Lorne sausage in Yoker (already being hailed as a small miracle)
Within ten minutes of the start GHK were two scores ahead, both by Tom Smith with a side step and a burst of speed we haven’t seen since Jack Coleman was advised it was his round at the bar. Scott Robertson took the conversions with drop goals, one of them going over from the touch line. Terrific stuff.
Colin McGonnigle got on the score sheet with a scorcher of a run introducing a side step and then a fantastic dive to go over the line. Tom Smith and Jack O’Brien were both subbed as a result of knocks but GHK kept up the pressure.
Liam Mc.Dermid burst through tackles as he has done all season linking with other backs and sending them in for scores.
Several good shifts were put in by Malcolm Barr and Fraser Johnston, guys who put in big hits and just get on with it. Not far behind was Jon Mill and Mike Bothwick. A big improvement this week was the line out. Johnston and Bothwick took the ball cleanly and gave it to Blair Moscrop (Prop) who controlled it from there.
Charlie Dunlop had a mercurial run beating ten guys and then sadly fell with only one person to beat. DOH !!!! £2.00 straight into the kitty.
All of a sudden with about ten minutes to go, the great Yoda started playing like a man inspired, tackled everything that moved and scored a try. Heaven help us all, we thought, the man can’t stop creating miracles.
The final whistle blew and then we all witnessed what can only be described as a scene from Pride & Prejudice. Yoda in the role of Darcy emerging from that famous lake scene, ran to a young Miss Bennett (real name still unknown) ending in a clinch that lasted for ages. Spectators and their dogs eventually had to look away as they knew it was going to get messy. It would appear since Yoda started working with slabs of Lorne sausages life has changed for the good.
Lastly, a mention for Kris who took his try well and we have the makings of a good scrum half in Dave Armstrong who has just joined GHK.
