Glasgow Accies 43 v Stewartry 14 Match Report

New Anniesland

Sat 20th November 2007

Accies hit form at last!

Accies put their recent troubles behind them with a resounding victory over Stewartry. Accies came out of the blocks flying putting Stewartry immediately under pressure and won a penalty, which they kicked to touch on Stewartry’s 22m line. From the resulting lineout Accies drove the maul all the way to the try line and over for the opening try from Graeme Simpson. The conversion superbly struck over by Gareth Williams made it 7 – 0 with only 3 minutes gone.

Accies pack continued to dominate but Stewartry levelled the scores with a bizarre try as a penalty kick fell short and ran over the try line the ball was touched down by Max Henderson, a Stewartry player following up fell on the ball and claimed the try, bizarrely the referee awarded the try.

Accies pulled themselves together and scored their second try as Gareth Williams sliced through the Stewartry defence from 20 metres out following a succession of forward drives and good back interplay.

Accies 14 – Stewartry 7

On the 30 minute mark continued Accies pressure on Stewartry’s defence lead to some fancy footwork from Stewartry’s second row and he spent the next ten minutes in the sin bin. Accies took full advantage by driving for the line and as the ball came back winger Max Henderson danced up the blind side and as he was tackled on the line popped the ball up to Ross Chassels who ran over for Accies third try.

Accies 19 – Stewartry 7

Accies began to open up with Stu Smith tearing holes in the Stewartry back line to put Jamie Doig in the clear 35 metres out, Jamie hit the gas and dived over for the fourth try and bonus point converted by Gareth Williams.

Accies 26 – Stewartry 7 (Half Time)

The second half opened up with Accies continuing to press on and extend their lead with a penalty from Gareth Williams. Needing no further encouragement Accies went on the try hunt again, they got their fifth try via Andy Pogrel who ran in for a smart try following a lineout drive and carried two men over with him. Again Gareth Williams converted.

Accies 36 – Stewartry 7

As often happens when so far ahead Accies went to sleep for the next 15 minutes with Stewartry finally opening up and running the ball from all over the park and deservedly got a consolation try after some excellent running rugby.

Accies 36 – Stewartry 14

Looking to finish with a flourish and send the supporters home happy with a final score Accies deliver with possibly the best try of the game. After a series of attacking forays the bal was spun out wide to the right with Chassels and Hermes tormenting their opposite men and as they cut back inside Alan Wilson came looping around to take the pass and burst up the blind side to run in for the final score converted again by Gareth Williams.

Accies 43 – Stewartry 14 (Full Time)

Overall an excellent result for Accies who thoroughly deserved their win which moved them up the league table and gave them real reward for some excellent play throughout the game. They can look forward to next weeks match at Dumfries with confidence.
