ACCIES PROGRAMME NOTES

Chairman's Welcome

On behalf of Glasgow Accies Rugby I welcome the President, Committee Members, Players and Coaching staff from Grangemouh RFC to New Anniesland this afternoon. I hope that you have an enjoyable afternoon.

This is the first time that the Clubs have played in a National League match however they have met twice in the last two years, both times in the Scottish Cup. Two years ago Accies traveled to Grangemouth and were beaten but gained their revenge last season when they won 29-3 at New Anniesland. With both sides deep in the relegation zone this match has an added significance.

Last Saturday Accies traveled to Dumfries and despite a brilliant performance from the pack for 30 minutes in the first half were disappointed to lose by 29-15. Their undoing was caused by two interceptions, one in each half, both converted and basically that was the fourteen points difference between the two sides in an exciting game of rugby. Accies are having real difficulty in winning away from home. Time after time soft tries are conceded when they have had more than a half share of the territorial advantage. If they can cut out the basic errors they could still have a successful season as the talent is undoubtedly there to be seen.

Player Profile – Simon Cadwallader
The player being featured this week is our other ex Lancaster Grammar schoolboy Simon Cadwallader, the other being Andy Pogrel. Simon was born in Nairobi on 1st December 1975. At the age of four he returned to Burnley in Lancashire. He was educated at Lancaster Grammar School and was in the same boarding house as Andy Pogrel. It was Andy who introduced him to Glasgow Accies.

After school he spent a year with ’Project Trust’ on voluntary service in Zimbabwe before attending Manchester University from where he graduated with a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering. He was then lured north to Aberdeen University where he obtained an Msc in Bio Medical Engineering.

Although he had played school rugby and had captained the 2ndXV he had not played any rugby for 9 years before joining Accies in 2003. He commenced as a second row forward in the STAGS but soon his playing ability and physiquie came to the attention of the coaches and he was converted to a very combatitive prop forward. He missed the whole of last season as he was posted on business to Michigan in the USA. Doosan Babcock employs him as a Design Engineer in Glasgow.

He had the sense to marry Barbara, in May 2006, a Glaswegian he met while studying in Aberdeen. They now live on the Southside of the city.

In the relatively short time that Simon has been with the Club he has given great service on and off the field. He is currently the Rugby Section Social Convener and the Webmaster. He recently launched the splendid new Glasgow Accies Rugby website that can be found on www.Glasgow-Accies. Co.uk.
