HIGH'S CUP RUN KEEPS SEASON ALIVE

The High School of Glasgow gained revenge for defeat earlier in the season with a 7-0 victory over their local rivals Glasgow Academy in the third round of the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools under-18 Cup.

And from this afternoon’s fourth round draw their reward is a home tie against the winners of Hillhead/Jordanhill v Earlston High. That tie will be played at Jordanhill School on Wednesday (kick-off 2pm).

Barry Fitzgerald from Glasgow High’s PE staff said: “Our cup run has kept our season alive. We enjoyed a good trip to Arran on the boat and then we were able to defeat Glasgow Academy last week.”

High’s points against Glasgow Academy came from a try by Jamie Fleming, converted by Struan Gray. “The try came from a midfield break by our inside centre Scott Louden. He ran a good line and the gap just opened up in front of Jamie and he decided to run. It was our best move of the game,” Fitzgerald added.

Should Earlston qualify for the fourth round tie there’ll no doubt be some quiet satisfaction for former Scotland and British Lions coach Jim Telfer.

Scott Renwick from Earlston’s PE staff explained: “Most of our team are also playing club rugby at Melrose Wasps. They’ve put together some good results there, where they’re coached by former Melrose players like Robbie Brown, Gel Tait and David Shiel. Jim Telfer’s also been working with them and he’s definitely helped in building up their belief.”

Renwick described his side’s approach as “pretty forward dominated” but also praised the contributions of the Jackson brothers, Arran at full-back and Craig at centre.

Also in action in remaining third round ties this week are Stewart’s-Melville College who travel the short distance to meet their Edinburgh neighbours Fettes College on Wednesday (kick-off 2.30pm) while Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools Cup holders, Bell Baxter HS face Hutchesons’ GS under the Braidholm lights on Wednesday (kick-off 7pm).
