GHK 2nd xv. 22. Glasgow Accies 2nd xv. 29.
This was a right old classic derby match between two, well-matched sides. Although not gifted with prospective British Lions members for the next tour to South Africa, they showed what total commitment to the cause is all about.
GHK took an early lead after Charlie Dunlop charged down a clearance kick and was first to ground the ball after a chase with the Accies stand-off.
Whilst the touch line of GHK supporters were still letting off flares and composing sonnets at the early score, Accies did exactly the same up the other end of the pitch, a charge down kick although it appeared the scorer was over the dead ball line, just a tad. (The player managed to get his arm out of the way of the 19 bus going along Anniesland Road !!) The try stood.
Accies turned on the style and their centres literally blew our guys apart. Sadly, there was no defence at all, indeed, we took up the old favourite past time of the ”Corvette” form of defence where we just escort the opposition to the line. GHK soon found themselves a further three scores down.
Sadly, our big day players did not manage to find their form and this left us playing catch up. Basically, it was all too frantic once again and sometimes we just try some really complicated moves that just don’t work. Long miss passes, kicks not going to touch and then the real killer; the brain goes into neutral. We must have the ability to think on the pitch.
Anyway enough of that stuff.
The great thing about the twos is they never give up. The forwards started to take the ball on and soon we were back in the game with a couple of trys.
Russell Johnston led by example with some terrific breaks and courageous tackles. The back row too just keep going and continually batter into the opposition.
Credit to Accies, they did not give up either. Some really sound defence from them towards the end of the game. Disco made a big difference with his charging runs and brought us back into contention with a superb try.
Really looking forward to the game against Marr this Saturday, one that should be all ticket.
Can I ask for a really big turn out at training if possible on Thursday.
Also I, J B Thow, would like to apologize to certain players for picking them out for a blasting at half time; not the correct way. It is a team game and individual performances should be left until further discussions after the match in the club house.
