MELROSE'S dreadful run continued as they were swept aside by Glasgow Hawks at Old Anniesland. A month ago, the Borderers were being viewed as the most likely threat to Boroughmuir at the head of the title race. Now they are in danger of being sucked into the relegation dogfight.
The 3-0 try-count was an accurate reflection of the contest. Prop Gary Strain bagged the first Hawks touchdown in the 13th minute, the others coming from former Scotland speed merchant Rory Kerr and Zimbabwean playmaker Ian Noble.
Melrose could only respond with a penalty treble by Scott Wight and the margin would have been greater had Hawks been on kicking form.
Melrose's John Dalziel was the only yellow card recipient after he sparked a brawl featuring up to 16 men.
