Scotland lost their opening tie of the IRB World Series 7s tournament in Dubai this morning dispatched by reigning world champions New Zealand 5-41.
Coach Stephen Gemmell’s young squad trailed 0-19 at the break and had the last word in the contest with scrum-half Andrew Dymock (Dundee HSFP) crossing for their lone try in reply to seven scores from New Zealand.
Gemmell said: “We played reasonably well in the first-half when we kept a bit of ball but we were punished when we made mistakes. We tried to force things in contact and started to fall off tackles.”
The Scots, who are in Pool A, must also face France and the Arabian Gulf today, the French winning their opening game of the day 26-0 against the locals.
Gemmell added: “We now need to regroup. Our next game’s against France and we always knew that would be a big game.”
That match is due to kick-off at 10.48 GMT, while Scotland’s game against the Arabian Gulf is due to start at 1.22pm.
